Dr. Gregor Wiedemann has been a Senior Researcher in Computational Social Sciences at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research since September 2020. He heads the Media Research Methods Lab (MRML) research group. His research combines methods from computational social science and natural language processing with questions in empirical media and communication research. His main areas of interest include automated content analysis and argument mining, the application and methodological evaluation of large language models, the analysis of digital publics and social media, and the spread of mis- and disinformation.
In current projects, he investigates, among other topics, the use of communicative AI in political online discourse, the structures and dynamics of social media platforms, and new methods for collecting and analysing platform and multimodal media data. He is a member of the DFG Research Unit “Communicative AI” (ComAI), which examines the societal conditions and consequences of communicative artificial intelligence.
Gregor Wiedemann studied Political Science and Computer Science in Leipzig and Miami, USA. In 2016, he received his PhD in Computer Science from the Department of Natural Language Processing (Prof. Gerhard Heyer) at Leipzig University, with a dissertation on the automation of discourse and content analysis using text mining and machine learning. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Language Technology group (Prof. Chris Biemann) at the University of Hamburg.
