Judith Möller is the Research Director of the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow Institute (HBI) and a professor of “Empirical Communication Research, with a focus on media use and the social effects of media” at the University of Hamburg. This is a joint appointment that involves teaching at the university’s Institute for Journalism and Communication Studies as well as intensive research at the HBI.
She studies how people use news and political information and what implications this has for democratic public spheres. Her research focuses on two questions: (1) the effects of personalized political communication on individuals and society as a whole, and (2) the role of (new) media in the process of opinion formation, particularly as part of political socialization processes.
Judith Möller was previously an associate professor of political communication in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and an adjunct professor in the Department of Sociology and Political Science at the University of Trondheim. She is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Communication and Political Communication.
The transfer of her research and collaboration with practitioners is of great importance to Judith Möller. She regularly participates in public debates and science festivals and maintains an ongoing dialogue with newspaper publishers, public broadcasters, and media regulatory authorities.
