The Media Logic of Information Intermediaries and Its Significance for Opinion Formation

In a dossier of the Federal Agency for Civic Education on the subject of “Digital Disinformation”, PD Dr. Jan-Hinrik Schmidt writes about the media logic of information intermediaries such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

[“With the Internet, and especially with social media, the structure of the public […] has changed in recent years. Platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter, but also the search engine Google have become indispensable media offers for many people in order to receive or distribute information on all conceivable topics. They function as “intermediaries” who themselves do not produce their own content, but create the conditions for their users to be able to disseminate or find content of all kinds. But what influence do they have on the formation of opinion? Where do they function differently from the familiar journalistic and journalistic offerings from television, radio and print?”]
