PD Dr. Jan-Hinrik Schmidt provides an overview of blogs as an object of empirical social research and outlines methodological approaches for studying them.
Abstract
[“Weblogs” (or simply “blogs”) are regularly updated websites that present specific content—most commonly texts of varying length, but also images or other multimedia content—in reverse chronological order. Individual posts are accessible via unique URLs and typically allow readers to leave comments. Through cross-references in posts and comments (Nam, Chapter 74 in this volume), as well as through recommended links to other blogs—the “blogroll”—most blogs are part of a broader network of websites (Schünzel/Traue, Chapter 71 in this volume). The collective body of all blogs is commonly referred to as the “blogosphere.”]
