Jan-Hinrik Schmidt is Senior Researcher in Digital Interactive Media and Political Communication at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research. He is interested in the interplay between media and society. A first focus of his work is on different ways social media platforms such as TikTok, Twitter/X, and YouTube, are transformin information management, political participation, and public spheres. A second area of focus is the role of Public Service Media in promoting deliberation, representation, and social cohesion.
Since 2026, he is head of the research program Transformation of Public Communication at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research. In addition, he is the scientific director of the Hamburg branch of the Research Institute Social Cohesion, which has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space since 2020.
