Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen is a senior researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI) and a professor at the University of Hamburg (in accordance with §17 HmbHG). At HBI, she heads the research group Transformation of Journalism and the Public Sphere. Her research focuses on the transformation of journalism within a changing environment, the changing relationship between journalism and its audiences, and the theoretical foundations of communicative AI between medium and a communicative partner. She approaches these questions from the perspectives of communication theory and media sociology, with a particular interest in how human and machine communication reshape one another.
Wiebke Loosen is co-spokesperson of the DFG- and FWF-funded Research Unit (FOR 5656) “Communicative AI: The Automation of Social Communication” (ComAI), which investigates how societal communication changes when communicative AI becomes part of it; within the research unit, she leads the project on the role of communicative AI in journalism. She is also active in the international Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS) network and led the German country study in its third wave. She is a member of the Communicative Figurations research network, a joint initiative of the University of Bremen and HBI.
