Particular Data Protection Requirements in Online Counselling of Children and Adolescents

Dr. Stephan Dreyer writes about data protection requirements for online counselling of minors in an article in the online brochure “Online Counselling for Sexualised Violence in Childhood and Adolescence”, published by the BKSF (Bundeskoordinierung Spezialisierter Fachberatung gegen sexuelleisierte Gewalt in Kindheit und Jugend [Federal Coordination of Specialised Counselling against Sexualised Violence in Childhood and Adolescence]). It was written as part of our project “GDPR and Growing Up in Digital Media Environments”.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic was not the only thing that pushed counselling centres for children and young people to look into forms of online counselling. Even before the pandemic, it was clear that counselling services that can be accessed via the internet should meet younger counselling seekers where they are: online. This article addresses specific requirements that arise from a data protection perspective in online counselling for children and young people. Data protection requirements make the conception and planning of online counselling conditional, but do not fundamentally stand in the way of its implementation.
